Forbes Names Unum as one its Best Employers for Diversity
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 26, 2023) – For the fourth year, employee benefits provider Unum Group (NYSE: UNM) is one of Forbes 2023 Best Employers for Diversity. In the insurance category, the company makes the top 10 list.
“At Unum, inclusion and diversity is woven into our workplace values and principles,” said Valoria Armstrong, Chief Global Inclusion & Diversity Officer. “Belonging happens when we appreciate and honor our different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. As a company, we strive to create a culture where employee can see themselves in every aspect of our business.”
Last year, the company launched Inclusion & Diversity training that explored personal biases, inspired self-awareness, and encouraged mindfulness to interrupt biases. Through the Social Justice initiative, Unum supports organizations that work to end racism, discrimination, and bias. Unum is committed to help achieve Paradigm for Parity Coalition’s goal to achieve gender parity in leadership by 2030, and a signatory with Disability:IN and CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion.
The Best Employers for Diversity is presented by Forbes and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. Approximately 45,000 U.S. employees were surveyed from companies with a minimum of 1,000 employees. The evaluation was based on three different criteria:
Direct Recommendations: Employees were asked to give their opinions on a series of statements regarding Age, Gender, Ethnicity, Disability, LGBTQA+ & General Diversity in their current workplace. The recommendations of women, elders, and ethnic minorities were weighted higher than the non-minority groups.
Indirect Recommendations: Participants were also given the chance to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stand out either positively or negatively regarding diversity. Only the recommendations of minority groups were considered.
Key Performance Indicators: Extensive research was carried out to evaluate how companies fared across a range of diversity-related best-practices. These included things like the presence of resource groups within the company, the publication of diversity data, and the share of women in board and executive positions.
